Red Wigglers
You can raise your own live food while doing a service to our environment: Tens of thousands of people in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada already are composting their kitchen waste--and even their newspapers, cardboard, and autumn leaves--with small red worms called red wigglers (scientific name Eisenia fetida). The method that they are using creates little or no odor, requires so little space that it is even used by many small-apartment dwellers, and is not like traditional composting in that it requires no additions of fertilizer, lime, or large quantities of soil. As a bonus, most of these people are collecting the resulting worm compost and worm castings (soil-like droppings) for use in their gardens and potted plants. What's more, those who keep tropical fish have discovered that they can feed the worms (which multiply as they perform their work) to their fish! Some of these people, with large families, large amounts of waste products and an entrepreneurial bent, are even selling the compost, the castings, and their extra worms.
Conservation-minded Americans have already begun to follow the lead of these wise foreigners and the number of Americans now doing this kind of easy composting is exploding. Those who feed their worms to their fish report that the fish love them. We urge you to consider joining this growing group of conservation-minded hobbyists who know a good deal when they see one!
We have put together four items that you can purchase singly or combined to learn about and get into this great way to produce living food for your fish while doing your part for the environment and maybe even making a few extra bucks. What we have done is to offer you a sequence of products so you can move at your own rate of speed.
About the Worms
The worms used in this method are not the large earthworms that come out at night on wet lawns. They are much smaller, about a third of the size of the lawn worms, even smaller when young. Large fish (like oscars, large angels and discus, many African cichlids, and lots of others) can eat these worms whole. Smaller fish must have the worms cut up a bit. Those who do not want to cut the worms up because it is a bit messy, may wish to freeze a batch of worms in a plastic baggie, then shave or chop pieces off the frozen material, thus reducing the messiness to almost zero.
WORM STUFF PRODUCTS
Worms Eat My Garbage
There is no doubt about which is the best book on the new worm composting. It is Worms Eat My Garbage by Mary Appelhof, who proudly embraces her justly won nickname "Worm Woman." This book has everything you need to know to do things right, and answers all your questions.
You can easily build your own bin according to the instructions in the items above. But if you want a light-weight bin of very superior design, you will want the one we keep right in the office. It is designed by Mary Appelhof and sold under the registered trademark name Worm-a-Way. It is made of tough, recycled plastic, is 19 x 16 x 12 inches high, and comes with unique ventilation tubes and a vented lid. It can handle about three pounds of table scraps and other organic waste per week. Even when this bin is fully loaded, you can move it around with relative ease. The book pictured with the bin does not come with it. Buy it above if you like.
For feeding fish, start right. You want worms that do not have raw manure or any other raw fecal matter in their digestive tracts. We provide such worms. And we ship them priority mail to limit stress on them. You can order them for immediate shipment or you can order a coupon for receiving worms after you have set up your bin. Please note that our bins and worms are sent separately and may not arrive at the same time, and you may not want to set up the bin immediately. So, if you are using one of our bins, buying the worms by the coupon method is best. In most cases, 1,000 worms are enough for the bins we sell if you are just composting at first. Buy 2,000 worms if you wish to start harvesting up to 12 worms a day from your bin right away. If you want simply to have worms sent to you so you can try them out on your fish, just order our minimum quantity of 500, which amounts to about half a pound. The worms will stay alive for awhile if they are cooled in the warmest part of your fridge. They will live even longer if you sprinkle a pinch or two of corn meal, oatmeal, or flake fish food in with them. When you order worms, below, be sure to indicate, if you want them shipped immediately or if you want a coupon to use so we will ship later.
Call, write, or e-mail for delivery of 500 or more worms per week or per month, for four or more weeks or months, free of shipping charges.
